Packages from £9.60 a head including VAT, what changes the price, and how much food your guest list needs.
Somewhere in every wedding plan there is a spreadsheet with a row that says “food” and a number that keeps changing. If you are asking how much wedding catering costs for an Indian wedding in West Yorkshire, our buffet packages typically come in at £9.60 to £16.80 per head including VAT, with wedding catering across Yorkshire often falling somewhere between about £10 and £25 per head. This guide is for couples planning Indian food for their wedding who want to fill that row in properly before they start calling around.
It explains our West Yorkshire catering packages and prices, what is and is not included, what affects the final cost, how much food you need for your guest list, how the buffet service and delivery work on the day, and how booking works, so you can judge whether it fits your plans and budget before you pick up the phone.
Our prices are on our website and they include VAT, so there is nothing to work out. Everything below is taken from our catering page and our terms of business.
Prices vary a great deal from one caterer to the next, and many only give a figure once you have filled in an enquiry form. As a rough guide, independent buffet caterers in Yorkshire tend to charge somewhere between £10 and £25 per head for the food, with more on top for things like serving staff, crockery or an all-inclusive venue package.
At Spices & Rices, Indian wedding catering costs between £9.60 and £16.80 per head, including VAT, depending on how many starters and dishes you want. There is a minimum of 20, 40 or 50 guests depending on the package. A booking deposit of 20% of your catering total secures the date and comes off the final bill. On top of the food, budget for chafing dish hire at £50 plus VAT if you want the buffet kept hot, which carries a separate refundable £100 equipment deposit, and a delivery charge based on the distance from our kitchen in Batley.
To put that into one number: a buffet for 100 guests on our middle package is £1,320 for the food, and a little under £1,400 with the chafing dishes hired, before delivery and before the equipment deposit comes back to you. You would pay £264 of that up front as the booking deposit and the rest seven days before the day.
We offer three buffet packages. Every one is served with salad and sauce, and all prices include VAT.
Two starters and two dishes, with a choice of pilau rice or chapatti. This suits a smaller wedding, a registry office reception, an evening buffet, or a gathering the day after the main event. (For a pre-wedding get-together at home, our Indian party food guide covers starter platters.)
Three starters and three dishes, with pilau rice and a choice of chapatti or naan. Three dishes is the point at which a buffet can offer something mild, something with a bit of heat and a proper vegetarian option, which is why this is the package most wedding customers choose.
Four starters and four dishes, with pilau rice and a choice of chapatti or naan. For a larger reception where you want a fuller spread, with room for chicken, beef or kheema and a vegetarian dish alongside each other.
If you have fewer than 20 guests, want specific dishes or need something that does not fit the packages, get in touch and we will put a tailored option together for you.
The per-head price covers the food, freshly prepared for your event in our HACCP-compliant kitchen, and delivered to your venue at the agreed time or collected from us in Batley. All of our meat is halal. Salad and sauces are included, and so is VAT.
It is worth knowing what the price does not cover, because it keeps the quote honest. We are a drop-off caterer. We do not provide serving staff, and we do not provide plates, cutlery, glasses or any service on the day. Your venue, your family or a hire company covers those. We do not do desserts or drinks either.
Guest numbers. The biggest factor by far, because the price is per head. Book for the number of people who will actually eat; the 20% booking deposit secures the date and the final numbers are confirmed nearer the time.
Which package you choose. The difference between Essential and Signature is £7.20 per head, or £720 on a hundred guests. That buys two extra starters and two extra dishes. For many weddings, Celebration with three dishes chosen well is the sweet spot.
Menu choices. Within a package the dishes are yours to choose from our dish options: nineteen chicken dishes from Chicken Korma and Chicken Tikka Masala through to Chicken Karahi and vindaloo, six beef dishes, six kheema (minced beef) dishes and eight vegetarian dishes including Chana Dhall, Bombay potatoes and aloo gobi. Choosing chapatti or naan does not change the package price, but if you want full individual portions rather than buffet portions, that is a tailored quote.
Delivery distance. Delivery is charged separately, plus VAT, depending on where your venue is. Batley to Dewsbury is a short hop; Batley to York is not. We give you the figure in the quote. Collecting the food yourself removes the charge altogether.
Equipment. Chafing dishes (the stainless steel food warmers with burners underneath) are £50 plus VAT to hire, with a separate refundable £100 equipment deposit. If your venue has its own warmers, or you are collecting in your own containers for a buffet at home, you can leave this out.
Wedding catering costs can vary widely because several factors affect what couples should expect to pay. Because the packages are priced per head, the quantity scales with your guest list automatically. What most people actually want to know is how far the food goes, so here is how a buffet from us is portioned.
Our set packages are designed for a buffet, so the portions are split between the dishes you choose rather than being full individual portions of each. On the Celebration package, for example, each guest is allowed for across three starters and three dishes, plus rice and bread, which on a buffet plate adds up to a full meal. It is the way most wedding buffets work and it is why three or four dishes feel more generous than one, even though the total per head is the same.
| Guests | Essential (2 starters, 2 dishes) | Celebration (3 starters, 3 dishes) | Signature (4 starters, 4 dishes) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 50 | £480 | £660 | £840 |
| 100 | £960 | £1,320 | £1,680 |
| 150 | £1,440 | £1,980 | £2,520 |
| 200 | £1,920 | £2,640 | £3,360 |
Food only, including VAT. A 20% booking deposit is paid up front and comes off this total. Add £60 including VAT for chafing dish hire if you want it, delivery by distance, and a £100 equipment deposit that is returned when the equipment comes back. Venue access and set-up time matter too, especially for outdoor or marquee weddings, so tell us about them when you enquire.
A few things help you land on the right number. Count adults and older children in full. Tell us how many younger children there are and we will advise on how to count them. Most caterers charge per person, and more guests usually mean more staff and logistics even though smaller weddings can be simpler to manage. If your guests are big eaters, or you would like everyone to have a full portion of every dish, say so when you enquire and we will price it as a tailored package rather than leave anyone short. Cuisine and dining style also shape the spend, since buffet-style meals are usually cheaper than a sit down meal while family-style service can reduce labour compared with plated service. Our portion guide goes into more detail on how much rice and curry people eat at a buffet. Service style and menu style affect the experience as well as the total, and evening food or extras like an open bar will change your catering budget. Casual formats such as bowl food, street food, or food trucks can lower food costs, though set-up or hire needs can offset some savings.
This is drop-off catering, and it is worth understanding what that means before you book.
We prepare the food fresh for your event and deliver it hot to your venue at the time we agree, or you collect it from our shop at 100 Upper Commercial Street in Batley. If you have hired chafing dishes, the food arrives in them ready to be set on the buffet table and lit, and they will keep everything hot through the meal. From there the buffet is yours: guests help themselves, and your venue or family looks after plates, cutlery and clearing. We do not stay to serve, so the service style is informal; bear that in mind when you plan staffing, venue logistics and any evening food.
After the event, the chafing dishes and any other equipment need to be dropped back to us in Batley, unless we have agreed a different arrangement in advance. Any equipment left at the venue remains your responsibility until it is returned. The £100 equipment deposit is refunded once everything is back with us.
We are based in Batley and cater weddings across West Yorkshire: Leeds, Bradford, Wakefield, Huddersfield, Halifax, Dewsbury and everywhere in between, as well as the surrounding areas out as far as York. We deliver to banqueting halls, hotels, community centres, village halls, marquees and homes, and the venue type can affect access, set-up and cost. If you are not sure whether we reach you, ask; the delivery charge in your quote will tell you.
For marquee and other outdoor weddings, especially where evening food is planned later on, agree timings and the collection or return of equipment with us in advance.
We have been a family-run kitchen in Batley since 1996. What started as a small family business has grown into a shop, a catering service and the CurryOut range of chilled meals, but the recipes and the way we work have not changed much. Everything is cooked in our HACCP-compliant kitchen, all of our meat is halal, and we would rather tell you a price than make you ask for one.
The people who have used us for weddings say it better than we can. Jazz Robson-Ringrose, after her wedding: “The currys was absolutely one of the best, if not the best we have tasted.” Tom Denham, also after a wedding: “Everyone was going back for seconds and taking food away with them.” More are on our catering reviews page.
A booking deposit of 20% of your catering total secures your date, and that amount goes towards the final bill. The balance is due seven days before the event. If you hire our chafing dishes, there is a separate £100 equipment deposit, refunded after the equipment is returned. We confirm the menu, guest numbers and delivery or collection time with you in writing, and we ask you to tell us in advance about any allergies or special dietary requirements among your guests so the kitchen can plan for them.
